We read the story, The Little Red Hen and The Little Red Hen Makes a Pizza. The kids loved both stories. We compared the stories, characters, and endings. We also applied some of our 7 habits that we are learning about with the stories. We realized that the animals weren't thinking Win-Win because only one person was doing all of the work. (...there were some tales of some Daddies not helping do the chores...lol!) The Little Red Hen Makes a Pizza reminded us of Beginning With The End in Mind. The Little Red Hen didn't make a plan of all the ingredients she needed before she started making her pizza and she needed to go to the store multiple times! :) During the Science Lab, the children were able to retell the story with props, which was a Win-Win, because everyone was able to have something to help in the retelling. Then, the children made a charm necklace to help them to remember that our food comes from the farm! We put different things in the bag to represent: soil, water, sun, tomatoes, sauce, cow, cheese, wheat, flour, herbs, pig, pepperoni, and even a tree to represent the cardboard box that our pizza comes home in! It was a great learning experience for our kiddos!
We followed that experience with adding toppings on our paper pizza during Math. Each table had a slice of pizza and every child was in charge of adding the correct number of toppings according to the dice that they rolled. Afterwards, each table graphed their results. They had a lot of fun synergizing!
